Significance of the name Tawhiri

Rolleston now stands on former extensive grasslands, which were a rich mahinga kai-food and resource gathering area for Ngāi Tahu people. In 1868 Tawhiri Henare Pereita, a leading chief from Kaiapoi, claimed lands between Ōtautahi-Christchurch and Waikirikiri-the Selwyn River on behalf of the Kaiapoi Ngāi Tahu. While there were no other claimants, the claim was dismissed because the land had already been sold by the Crown.

Tawhiri Henare Pereita had knowledge of mahinga kai throughout the Canterbury Plains/Kā Pākihi Whakatekateka o Waitaha. He was also a key informant to Pākehā ethnographers as they were recording histories from Kaiapoi Māori for some of the first published texts on Te Waipounamu Māori history.

The Ngāi Tahu Property development in Rolleston is an opportunity to further acknowledge the rangatiratanga and claim of Tawhiri Henare Pereita to the area.
